What’s the real purpose of the digital euro? Is it about launching a bold new currency? Streamlining and modernizing how we pay? Safeguarding the monetary sovereignty of the twenty Eurozone nations against the grip of American financial dominance? Or is it about tightening the reins on Europeans’ spending—under the banner of security, counter-terrorism, or cracking down on financial crime—while piling yet another layer onto the existing web of bank controls, payment caps, and restrictions?

It’s a mix of all these ambitions. But there’s more beneath the surface. The digital euro quietly serves a hidden agenda: to shield and bolster banks against the rising tide of “alternative” currencies and the looming threat that parallel, user driven markets poses to the financial industry.
