Mercosur: Paris’s Phony Outrage
The provisional application of the Mercosur deal is nothing more than the logical working of EU institution— a project France not only supported, but actively helped build and bring to life
If the Mercosur deal is a textbook case, it’s because this agreement between the Mercosur countries and the European Union perfectly illustrates the mechanics of European integration ever since the common market was established over forty years ago.
Emmanuel Macron claims to be “surprised” that the European Commission is moving ahead with the provisional application of the deal with Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay—ignoring the European Parliament’s vote to suspend the process and awaiting the opinion of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU), which was asked to rule on the agreement’s compatibility with the treaties?
This conveniently forgets that Brussels’s move is perfectly allowed under the treaties... which France itself signed.
