This is funny because not only is deepseek significantly worse than US models (or Mistral for that matter) but Beijing is in the process of forcing their models to be closed source, for the exact same fears the US has.

And if you think China destroyed predatory techno capitalism, then you clearly know little of how China operates. If anything they’ve perfected it

The key issue is not to "perform better", but to perform well enough for the task at hand. DeepSeek performs brilliantly for,e.g., supply chain optimization, treasury optimization etc., stuff that companies are actually after and that do have an impact on bottom line. It does so at a fraction of the cost - unless you enjoy swatting flies with nukes :D

I am not saying that China is not predatory; I am just saying that China killed the U.S. predatory tech capitalism.

Yes but given the dangers of getting something wrong, most companies opt for the best (it’s funny because the biggest user of Claude after the US is China). And while open source is quite useful, to use it effectively requires 1. Hardware and 2. The company setting up the entire infrastructure (servers, governance, data management). Most companies with rather pay a lab to do such a thing. And given the revenue openAI and Anthropic are raking in, it suggests companies are making that choice

Though that means there *is* an open lane here, for a business to help other companies set up and manage and open source alternative
