The key issue is not to "perform better", but to perform well enough for the task at hand. DeepSeek performs brilliantly for,e.g., supply chain optimization, treasury optimization etc., stuff that companies are actually after and that do have an impact on bottom line. It does so at a fraction of the cost - unless you enjoy swatting flies with nukes :D

And while open source is quite useful, to use it effectively requires 1. Hardware and 2. The company setting up the entire infrastructure (servers, governance, data management). Most companies with rather pay a lab to do such a thing. And given the revenue openAI and Anthropic are raking in, it suggests companies are making that choice
Though that means there *is* an open lane here, for a business to help other companies set up and manage and open source alternative
