It’s been ages since we did a short format—feels good to dust it off.
Today we’re talking economics, because the European raft is taking on water from every side, torpedoed first by two politically suicidal anti-Covid waves, then finished off by sanctions on Russia and the bottomless aid pit for Ukraine.
And now Emmanuel Macron dusts off the old Eurobonds chestnut: joint European debt, straight-up issuance of pan-European sovereign bonds.
Needless to say, virtually no one in Europe wants it—least of all the Germans.
Yet here in France we still have people in Paris clinging to the fantasy that the Franco-German couple is a real thing, when it’s never existed outside their fevered Parisian imaginations.
Across the Rhine, you will never hear the phrase “Franco-German couple.” Ever.
